This public health lecture series is named in honor of the historic Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, the premier training ground for African American medical professionals.  Although it closed its doors on August 17, 1979, we can learn much from the hospital’s history, presented by the very people who worked diligently to provide culturally sensitive care to the patients who so deeply trusted and loved them.

Guest Speaker and Honoree: John A. Wright, author and historian

John A. Wright is a native of St. Louis, MO and a graduate of the St. Louis Public Schools.   After graduation from Sumner High School, he went on to receive a B.A. from Harris Teachers College (now Harris-Stowe State University) and his M.E.D. and PH.D. from St. Louis University.

Dr. Wright has had a long and distinguished career as a St. Louis academic leader.  His previous positions include serving as the Interim Superintendent of Schools for St. Louis Public Schools, Interim Superintendent of Schools for the Normandy School District and Assistant Superintendent for the Ferguson-Florissant School District.  He is the author of 13 books about regional history, including The Ville, St. Louis, Discovering African American St. Louis, and St. Louis: Disappearing Black Communities.
