The Division of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the WashU Medicine offers support for visiting fourth-year medical students with career interests in gynecology and the promotion of health equity. The program will provide accepted students with a four-week rotation with WashU Medicine Gynecologic Oncology.
This opportunity provides funding and networking opportunities while promoting a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Applications by students from groups historically under-represented in gynecologic oncology and those whose pathway in medicine has been complicated by substantial personal and financial adversity are encouraged, though we encourage applications from a diverse student population.
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology provides safety net care to women from eastern and southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois who have known or suspected gynecologic malignancies. Patients are seen across all socioeconomic strata, racial/ethnic groups, and rural/urban origins. We provide full services, including outpatient assessment and chemotherapy, inpatient surgery, and management of complications of therapy or disease. Close referral relationships with radiation oncology, palliative medicine, hospice, and social services providers offer exposure to those disciplines. Students are exposed to the impact of social determinants of care on presentation, treatment, and outcomes.
Students rotate through inpatient care for a large gynceologic oncology service, assist in surgery, participate in outpatient clinics, and attend weekly Grand Rounds/M&M and Tumor Board discussions. During their last week, students are expected to provide a 30-minute presentation on a topic in gynecologic oncology (preferably related to health equity). There is no overnight call, although participation in rounds on one day for each included weekend is expected.
