Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine – Visiting Clerkship Program in General Surgery for Students Underrepresented in Medicine

This 4-week visiting surgical clerkship program is offered in late summer/fall.
Subinternship opportunities in surgical oncology, general surgery, surgical critical care,
minimally invasive surgery, colorectal surgery, and trauma at the only level 1 trauma center in Nevada. The student will attend surgery resident didactics, quality improvement conference, and grand rounds. The student will be assigned a mentor to help navigate the rotation and will have the opportunity to meet with the residency program director for assistance in preparing for the recruitment and interview season.

Who should apply?

  • Fourth –year medical students in good academic standing from any accredited U.S. medical school
  • Belong to a group that is recognized as underrepresented in the health professions including African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino, and/or Pacific Islander AND/OR be the 1st generation in family to attend a four-year college

Program Highlights

  • Paring with a faculty mentor
  • Career counseling from the General Surgery Residency Program Director, Dr. Joseph Carroll
  • Stipend of $2000 to help defray the cost of travel, housing, and food
