 uly of 1996.</p><p>A leading scholar on urban poverty\, he is the Director 
 of the Joblessness and Urban Poverty Research Program at Harvard's Malcolm 
 Wiener Center for Social Policy. He is the recipient of 42 honorary degrees
  and is the author of numerous publications including "When Work Disappears
 : The World of the New Urban Poor" and "The Bridge Over the Racial Divide: 
 Rising Inequality and Coalition Politics."</p>
