LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine – Visiting Diversity Clerkship in Pediatrics Scholarship Program

Deadline: June 15, 2022

As a joint venture between the Office of Diversity & Community Engagement, LSU Department of Pediatrics, and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, we are pleased to sponsor a fourth-year senior medical student who plans a career in Pediatrics and wishes to experience a rotation in our academic medical center. Students must self-identify as an under-represented minority (URM) and display genuine interest in exploring issues of social determinants of health, population medicine, access to care, and social justice.

The LSU Health Sciences Center historically serves a large, metropolitan community with many under-resourced neighborhoods challenged by the social determinants of health and affected by health disparities. The historic mission of our training institution is to care for every member of our community, regardless of station or situation. Our residency program is based at Children’s Hospital, which is currently the only freestanding children’s hospital in Louisiana. Here, we provide compassionate, state-of-the-art care for our patients with over 43 pediatric specialties.

Students selected for the program will receive:

  • Up to $2000 depending on housing options and total scholarships awarded – to be determined upon award decision.
  • Meal card at Children’s Hospital.
  • A resident or faculty mentor who will meet with the student during their rotation. Mentor will provide career/professional guidance and a personal connection to the community.
  • Meeting with Pediatric Residency Director and/or Associate Program Director.
  • Participation in all educational sessions with residents.

Students will participate in a 4-week rotation uniquely tailored for this experience, to include time on our Pediatric Hospital Medicine teams and time in our adolescent medicine clinics.
