The Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency would like to invite medical students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) to apply to do an away elective in Emergency Medicine at either Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) or the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) through the Visiting Clerkship Program.
If you are interested in participating at MGH: Please email Dr. Eric Shappell at firstname.lastname@example.org
If you are interested in participating at BWH: Please email Dr. Kathleen Wittels at email@example.com
Please send Dr. Shappell (MGH) or Dr. Wittels (BWH) your CV, transcript, and Step 1 scores directly for consideration of early placement.
Please only apply to the Harvard affiliated site that you have selected as your first choice. Spaces are limited and we want to accommodate as many students as possible.
More details about the Visiting Clerkship Program:
The Visiting Clerkship Program (VCP), sponsored by the Minority Faculty Development Program of the Harvard Medical School (HMS) Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership, provides support for fourth-year and qualified third-year medical students from groups underrepresented in medicine as defined by the AAMC, including, but not limited to, African-American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native, to participate in the HMS Exchange Clerkship Program.
We also welcome applications from medical students with social identities or backgrounds that are otherwise underrepresented in medicine.
VCP is designed to:
- Increase medical student awareness of opportunities in academic medicine;
- To increase student consideration of academic training programs for internship and residency; and especially
- To increase the number of students applying to HMS-affiliated hospital training programs from groups underrepresented in medicine.
Clerkships are four weeks in length and are available, space permitting, to full-time fourth-year students in good standing at accredited US and Canadian medical schools. Third-year students who have completed their last quarter core clerkships in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics are also eligible. In addition to completion of core requirements, all students applying to the VCP must have completed USMLE Step 1 prior to the start of their rotation. VCP participants are assigned a faculty advisor and offered opportunities to network with HMS faculty, house staff and students. A faculty/student dinner seminar is held during each rotation. In addition, participants have access to HMS and the HMS Countway Library, as well as hospital seminars and workshops.
Financial assistance (up to $400) is available toward transportation costs to and from Boston. Housing is also provided.
