Deadline: July 15, 2019

The American Academy of Addition Psychiatry is hosting a Summit sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for medical students at minority serving medical schools or minority pre-med students who are interested in learning about the benefits of a career in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, and professionals in psychology focusing on services appropriate for those with SUDs. The Summit will occur on August 17-18, 2019 at the Embassy Suites in Atlanta, Georgia.

During this 1 ½-day event, attendees will receive an overview of pharmacology as it relates to understanding addiction as a disease, emerging trends in addiction, and the importance of cultural competency in behavioral health services. Participants will also hear from experts in the fields of addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, and psychology to improve the quality of SUD treatment services delivered to racial and ethnic minority populations. The goal of this event is to increase the knowledge of behavioral health professionals on issues related to treatment and recovery support for individuals who are from racial and ethnic minority populations and have a SUD.

Students should submit a completed application to A-G Associates by Monday, July 15. Notifications will be sent out on Friday, July 19. Logistical information will be forthcoming once the applicants have been selected.
