Mount Sinai – Visiting Electives Program for Students Underrepresented in Medicine (VESPUM)

VEPSUM offers four-week electives at Icahn School of Medicine (MSSM) and its affiliates in the Graduate Medical Education Consortium to qualified 3rd-year and 4th-year medical students who attend U.S. accredited medical schools and who are from groups underrepresented in medicine. For the purposes of this program, this is defined as Hispanic (Mexican, Chicano, or Mainland Puerto Rican), Other Hispanic (Cuban, Dominican, or other), Black/African-American (not of Hispanic origin), Native American, or Asian Pacific Islander. In collaboration with the MSSM Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, VEPSUM is designed to increase diversity in the house staff and subsequently the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine and its affiliated institutions.

Electives are available between July and February.

  • Students must have completed their required core clerkships before starting the program.
  • Tuition is not charged.
  • Housing and travel expenses are subsidized for one month.

Students are provided the potential to network with residency program directors, residents, minority faculty, and students, and have access to the Office of Graduate Medical Education, Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, medical school library, seminars, and workshops.
The program is limited to electives in the fields of Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery. Please do not contact the departments or the Office of Student Affairs to coordinate the desired elective.

  • Official medical school transcript
  • USMLE Step 1 / COMLEX score (Score Card)
  • Letter of recommendation from the Dean
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the students school in the department to which the student applying
  • A photo (optional, but appreciated)

Please rank three elective choices on the application form.

Applications must be submitted by May 15 of the third year and we will notify you by May 31.
